History

Text Box: In 1946, Peter and Lena Bifarella purchased the Ulrich Hotel (photo below), one of Springville, New York’s oldest landmarks. The hotel was demolished and construction of a modern movie theatre was started on the site in 1948.
On October 4, 1949, the Joylan Theatre held it’s Grand Opening showcasing the ambiance of the Art Deco structure, from its glazed brown tile exterior; brightly lit marquee; the two adjacent store fronts, to its lavish interior; including a wood paneled lobby; red leather upholstered seats; the curved arch curtained stage; the newest state-of-the-art sound equipment, air conditioning and snack concession stand. The public flooded in to see the new musical romance: “That Midnight Kiss”.
Considered one of the architectural gems in Springville, the theatre has gained the attention of historical enthusiasts who have designated it as a perfect example of art deco design of the 1940 era.
In 1964, the Bifarella’s retired after 36 years in the theatre business. After this the theatre was sold four more times before the present owners, Ted and Debby Adams, bought the theatre in 1995.
For fifteen years we have provided you with friendly service and affordable prices that will have you coming back to the show time and time again.
Last year was our 60th Anniversary! To celebrate we had a viewing of the first movie played at the Joylan: “That Midnight Kiss”, sold novelty candy from the 40s, and ran a slideshow with interesting facts about the Joylan and the year 1949. See Picture Gallery for photos of the event.
